What makes a good main dish?

Generally speaking a 'main' comprises of a primarily protein-based food that you build your meal around. A lot depends on your personal preference, but chicken, fish, seafood, tofu, lean beef and poultry are good options.

How do I figure out how much a portion should be?

For lean proteins, one serving (or 100 calories) is 25g of protein (or 3 oz). You can see this by reading a nutrition label or using your hand as a measuring tool. Roughly '1 palm' is 100 calories of protein.
